COMPARISON BETWEEN CORONAVIRUS, SARS & INFLUENZA

CORONAVIRUS (COVID19)
  • Mode of Transmission : Spread through close contact with another individual, in particular through coughing and sneezing. Contagious even before symptoms appear.
  • Incubation Period : 14 days
  • Sign and Symptoms : Fever, Cough, Breathing difficulty or Shortness of breath, Running nose, Sore throat, Pathological changes in lungs (Eg. Pneumonia)
  • Mortality Rate : Unsure (Estimated 4-6%)
  • Treatment : No specific antiviral treatment (Supportive care is provided to relieve symptoms)
SARS (SARS-CoV)
  • Mode of Transmission : Spread through close contact with another individual, in particular through coughing and sneezing. Contagious only when symptoms appear.
  • Incubation Period : 2-10 days
  • Sign and Symptoms : Fever, Cough, Headache, Gastro-intestinal symptoms (Eg. Diarrhea), Sore Throat, Breathing difficulty or shortness of breath.
  • Mortality Rate : ~ 10%
  • Treatment : No specific antiviral treatment (Supportive care is provided to relieve symptoms)
INFLUENZA (H1N1, H3N2)
  • Mode of Transmission : Spread through close contact with another individual, in particular through coughing and sneezing. Contagious only when symptoms appear.
  • Incubation Period : 1-4 days
  • Sign and Symptoms : High Grade Fever, Cough, Headache, Muscle or body aches, Runny Nose, Sore Throat, Fatigue.
  • Mortality Rate : ~ 0.1%
  • Treatment : Antiviral Medications (Eg. Oseltamivir, Zanamivir, Peramivir, Baloxavir)
