What is Rotavirus?

Rotavirus is a highly contagious virus that primarily affects infants and young children. It is one of the most common causes of diarrhea in children worldwide, often leading to severe vomiting and dehydration. Due to its ease of transmission and rapid onset, rotavirus is a major concern for parents.

How is Rotavirus Transmitted?

The virus spreads mainly through the fecal-oral route. This means that it can be transmitted when food, water, or surfaces are contaminated with stool from an infected person. Rotavirus can also spread through direct contact, such as touching the hands of someone who is infected or coming into contact with contaminated toys or utensils.

Symptoms of Rotavirus Infection

Symptoms of rotavirus infection typically appear about two days after exposure. The illness usually begins with a sudden onset of severe diarrhea, accompanied by vomiting, fever, stomach cramps, and general discomfort. One of the most serious concerns in young children is dehydration, which can occur quickly and may require medical attention if not managed properly.

Treatment for Rotavirus

Oral rehydration solutions (ORS) are commonly used to replace lost fluids and electrolytes. In more severe cases, intravenous fluids may be needed. It’s also important to continue feeding your child, including breastfeeding, to support their recovery and maintain nutrition.

Prevention of Rotavirus

Preventing rotavirus starts with good hygiene and vaccination. The rotavirus vaccine is highly effective and is administered orally in multiple doses starting at two months of age. Practicing proper handwashing, disinfecting commonly used surfaces, and handling food safely can also help prevent the spread of the virus.

Rotavirus Vaccine Options

In Malaysia, two types of rotavirus vaccines are available. RotaTeq (RV5) is given in three doses at two, four, and six months. Rotarix (RV1) is given in two doses at two and four months.
